Welding company growth results in hiring more staff: Myers Welding Inc.

November 28, 2020

by Ruby Arsenault

Myers Welding Inc. located just outside Tignish is seeing the business grow and has a growing need to hire more Welding Fabricators.

The company fabricates equipment for the aquaculture, fishing, and farming industries, specializing in aluminum, steel and stainless steel. They do custom welding, custom fabrication of trailers, fishing equipment, boats, oyster barges, booms and boats, and other metal fabrication.

“Customers come to us with their ideas and needs and we get to work to meet these needs,” says owner Brian Myers.

“I have gone through so many different scenarios with my staff during the past years.  Years ago, some moved west for bigger bucks, and now some people want to find employment here on PEI as a result of COVID-19,” says Brian.

“As with most Canadian trades, finding experienced staff can be a struggle, and it’s rough when companies have to decline work due to a lack of employees,” says Brian. “I could hire up to six new Welding Fabricators if I could find them. I hire two at a time and get them up and going and feeling comfortable before I add a few more.

“I have been very fortunate to have some dedicated staff with an excellent skill set, but I could always use more. I am presently considering hiring foreign workers to fill the gap. I know its an employee’s market, but I like to think I offer good wages and stability for people to be able to work locally.  Now with COVID-19, working local seems to be a much better option for many.

“I presently have six full-time staff and have had as many as 11 in the past. Included in my staff are two excellent women who contribute a great deal to our production, and I encourage other women to apply.”

Positions offer 40 to 45 hours of work a week with competitive wages. “I am also very open to having interested individuals shadow our workplace for a few days to see if they like this environment. I always say, if you have someone who is willing to learn, you can teach them anything.”

Brian says the past year has been outstanding in equipment development and sales. “I ship  anywhere in the USA and Canada.”

Job requirements:

  • Interest in the field of welding and a willingness to learn
  • Some experience would be beneficial but willing to train
  • Safety oriented and able to problem solve
  • Physically capable of doing the job
  • Red Seal not required, but employer supports working towards certification
  • Good work ethic and attitude

How to apply
