Threads of Life – Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support
This charitable organization supports workers and families which have been involved in a workplace fatality, life-altering injury, or occupational disease. The national organization, which has been running since 2003, works in partnership with the Workers’ Compensation Board of PEI and in other provinces.
“We invite injured workers and family members to experience our services,” says Kevin Bonnis. “We have about 2,500 family members across the country. We train volunteers to do peer-to-peer support with injured workers and their families, as well as families living with the effects of work-related fatalities and disease. We also depend on volunteers to organize our annual Steps for Life fund-raising walks the first weekend in May.
“The organization was started by Shirley Hickman, whose son was killed in an explosion of an ice resurfacing machine in a hockey arena in Ontario. As a mother, she saw the need to support people affected by similar tragedies.”
