The Acadian Centre, located at the French school in DeBlois, is the community hub of the Acadian/Francophone population of western PEI.
The Acadian Centre facility includes the school, école Pierre-Chiasson, the daycare, le Centre l’Arc-en-ciel, and Le Conseil Rév.S.-É.-Perry inc.
The community centre employs three full-time staff and more than a dozen part-time employees. “Because many activities in French and English are offered throughout the year, we look to recruit more program instructors and volunteers on an ongoing basis,” says Monique Arsenault, Community Director.
“We are always seeking instructors for programs such as guitar and dance lessons, French classes, craft making, etc. We appreciate volunteers to help with activities, along with paid part-time staff to help with our rentals, such as bartenders, servers, and kitchen helpers. Anyone interested in being a volunteer or hosting community courses is encouraged to contact the centre.
“Many activities are offered throughout the year, such as community courses in rug hooking, step dancing, and fiddle, French awareness celebrations, Acadian Day celebrations, family evenings such as movie nights, and more. “We encourage you to contact us if you have new ideas ideas,” says Monique.
“We are always open to partnering with other groups or organizations in the community to offer an activity or a service to the residents of West Prince.”
The centre is also home to ‘le Club des coeurs joyeux,’ a very active seniors 55+ club.
- Weekend dances for ages 45 +
- Various crafting activities
- Theatre productions and dance groups with students
- Trips and social outings
- Visits to local senior homes
- Bingo & card games
“The month of March is always a busy month with French awareness celebrations, and we try to have lots of activities,” says Monique. “We also want to encourage non-French speaking individuals to join us, as we always offer a bilingual component to all our activities to ensure everyone understands and feels comfortable at the centre. Over the years, the centre has hosted dinner theatres, concerts, movie nights, family evenings, and more.”
There is a well-equipped kitchen and ‘La sale du Sénator Melvin-Perry’, an air conditioned banquet room which is often rented out for weddings and large functions.
“We also offer decoration packages and a catering service. The gym can be rented for functions such as kid’s birthday parties and team parties.
“We try to meet the demands of the community and surrounding areas, and we cater to a wide range of age groups.”
