Stepping into a foot care business

June 22, 2020

Anne Haldemann
Anne Haldemann, Owner.

Anne Haldemann has worked in the foot care profession for more than 20 years. In 2015, Anne opened Family Foot Care Centre at 100 Capital Drive in Charlottetown. She recently expanded the business by also offering monthly foot care services in Montague at the Pharmasave at 521 Main Street.

Working with Anne at the Charlottetown location are two Licensed Practical Nurses providing advanced diabetic foot care. As well, a New Brunswick-based Pedorthist offers orthopedic services twice a month. An Office Administrator works full-time with Anne as they provide a complete variety of foot care services for all ages. Orthotic footwear is available at the Charlottetown location.

“We receive referrals from the QEH and PCH hospitals, Diabetes Canada, and healthcare service providers including family doctors. Networking and partnering with professionals is important to better serve people’s foot care needs.”

Starting a business

“My clients encouraged me to open my own foot care clinic,” says Anne. “I purchased the necessary equipment without any financial assistance. When I first opened, I was both excited and apprehensive about starting a business. It was a major step.

“Through the use of the Internet, word-of-mouth referrals, walk-ins, home visits, and partnering with healthcare providers, the business is doing well.”

Anne’s suggestions for starting a business

  • Assess the need for the services you plan to offer.
  • Make sure the business location is visible and accessible.
  • “Most importantly, you need to have great passion and a desire for the work. I turned my passion into a successful business, and I know I’ve made a difference in someone’s life.”

Future plans

“There is a need for more foot care specialists on the Island,” says Anne. “Because of the great need for more outreach services in this field, I am considering more expansion, which could result in hiring more staff.”
