Have you applied to enter college or university? Congratulations on taking this step in your career.
Now the next step could be looking into what free financial support is available to help with your tuition and expenses throughout the year.
Many organizations, institutions, businesses, associations, foundations, and government programs offer scholarships, bursaries, awards, or grants based on a variety of criteria. Some organizations report that only a small number of students apply for this free money.
We encourage you to investigate what funding could be available to you, because the criteria for receiving assistance does vary. Criteria could include academic achievement, athletic skill, extra-curricular and community involvement, and/or special abilities. Scholarships can be based on accomplishment and other specific criteria, while grants and bursaries may take financial need into consideration as well.
It is important to do your research to make sure you know what is available to you.
Some pointers when applying:
- Volunteer work in your community increases the chances of being awarded funding.
- Make sure to take all the steps required by the application process.
- Be aware of the deadlines for each application.
- If a personal statement or essay is required, make sure it is free of spelling and grammatical errors. Ask someone to proofread it.
- Check with high school staff to find out more about your application options and get help with the application process.
