Safety & Compliance: Training and Education, Stratford and Montague
David K. Harris of Stratford has expanded his business. In 2010, he started a company called Safety & Compliance: Training and Education in Stratford. He recently opened an office in Kings County, next to Morley Annear Ltd. trucking company.
His business offers driver education and truck driving training in the classroom and on the road. He trains drivers in safety and compliance, safety management, training and development, road testing, safety audits, insurance, and more. He also recruits drivers for companies, interviews truck drivers searching for employment, and matches them with companies that are hiring.
His two main contracts are with Morley Annear Ltd. and Campbell Amusements. Between the two contracts, he is responsible for 85 trucks.
“I have been in the trucking industry in Canada, the UK, and the US for 46 years of my life,” says Dave. “During that time, I recognized a need for classroom training and training programs for drivers.
“The trucking trade has been good to me, and this is a way to give back to the industry and to hopefully bring young people into the trade.”
Dave attributes the success of his business to the support of Morley Annear Ltd. and Campbell Amusements. “It’s been very beneficial to be part of those organizations, which have offered me steady contracts that generate a livable income,” says Dave. “I also work very closely with the PEI Trucking Sector Council to recruit new people to the industry.”
“I am looking to hire a person to sell Spill Kits by phone, through Internet sales, and doing demonstrations across PEI and the Maritimes,” says Dave. Spill Kits are used to contain chemical and waste spills before they damage the environment.
“The ideal candidate would have trucking and sales knowledge and experience. The right person for the position would also assist with safety and compliance training.”
Future hiring needs
The future plan is to hire a Safety Manager Coordinator and train the person to deliver the Safety & Compliance program to trucking companies as the Kings County business location grows.
Industry Wall of Fame
Dave’s office walls are lined with certificates he earned through his work in the trucking industry. As well, the PEI Trucking Sector Council featured Dave as an Employee of the Week. The following paragraphs are taken from www.peitsc.ca/walloffame.php?id=53.
