Residential services organization has ongoing need for casual relief staff

May 17, 2024

by Ethan Paquet

Queens County Residential Services Inc. (QCRS Inc.) is a not-for-profit organization that delivers a range of programs and services for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

About 210 staff members provide support and services to more than 150 clients through QCRS group homes and day programs across Queens County, with a focus on enriching the lives of clients through person-centered plans that promote self-esteem, independence, and well-being.

“Working with adults with a disability is a very rewarding experience, and for most people it is a calling rather than just a job,” says Janessa Culleton, HR/Organizational Support. “To make a difference in someone’s life is a special thing.”

Hiring needs

QCRS has an ongoing need for Casual Relief Support Workers, Janessa says. “These workers fill in for our permanent staff when they are sick or are taking vacation time. It is a fun, rewarding work environment, and we offer a flexible work schedule with a combination of days, evenings, and overnight shifts, with paid sleep time.”

General duties for this role include providing client care in a residential setting.

“Those applying for this role should have an educational background in the Human Services field, or a Registered Care Worker, Youth Worker, or a Nursing diploma or degree. A combination of relevant work experience is good to see, too.”

Wages and benefits

Casual Relief Support Workers start at $20.41 per hour plus four percent vacation pay. Staff also get access to the Employee Wellness Program, which includes a gym membership.

How to apply

Current job opportunities can be found on the QCRS website, their Facebook page, and Indeed. Janessa says the best way to apply is to reach out directly through a phone call or email, or by visiting the main office at 39 Maypoint Road in Charlottetown.

“Face-to-face is the best way for us to get to know somebody’s personality. In this field, personality is a huge factor in choosing the right candidates, so I invite anyone to come meet with us in person to talk more about starting a career with us.”

When applying, job seekers should highlight any previous volunteer experience, on-the-job training, or employment-related experience involving helping people, especially persons with disabilities.

“It’s important that cover letters are included so we see more details of your experience related to the position. It doesn’t matter how small or far back the information is. These details help you stand out and get your foot in the door.

“If you have the right personality and you are willing to learn and be there for people, there is an opportunity here for you. It’s the kind of job where you need to be ready for anything and think quickly on your feet, but the relationships and rewards outweigh any stressors that may come with the job.”
