PEI Commercial Construction hiring update during COVID-19

May 7, 2020

PEI Commercial Construction hiring update during COVID-19Over the last year, PEI has led the country in population growth, economic growth, and construction growth. The industry typically employs about 6,500 workers on PEI, and that number had gone up by about 1,000 since last year.  The majority of people working on job sites are 55 and over.

CAPEI has 190 active members.  Due to COVID-19, about 60 percent of our member companies are working on construction projects at this point in time. Some of those companies are employing about 60 percent of their staff.

However, hiring is still taking place. Some companies have scaled back their hiring but many other small to large size companies still have a strong demand for skilled workers such as Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC, Welders, and other jobs.

The best approach for those looking to work in this field either full-time or for the summer months is to send a resumé to [email protected] and to apply to jobs listed on www.islandbuilder.ca/jobs and www.workpei.ca.

We are still ‘Building PEI one day at a time’ and facing challenges daily/hourly to maintain our sites, projects and people. Our number one focus is the safety of our workers and their families.

When applying for work in this industry, it is very important to be well educated on how to keep yourself and others safe on a job site with regards to COVID-19. For more information on safety procedures, click here.
