January 3, 2023 – Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: The Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a religious order of Sisters based in Summerside, are venturing to build a Daycare facility (the “Mother Alba Learning
Center”) in that community. The Sisters, who had been operating a Catholic Daycare facility in Welland Ontario prior to their move to the Island in 2018, are experienced Daycare providers, who have helped thousands of children develop intellectually and socially since 1958.
There is a well documented shortage of spaces in Summerside for childcare, which puts strain on families who require this service in order to gain meaningful employment and contribute to the community. The situation is so dire, that lack of suitable childcare has been sited by professionals such as physicians and nurses (who are desperately needed in the community) as a reason not to immigrate to the areIn order to address this need, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart are endeavoring to build a daycare facility that will allow them to greatly expand the number of children and families that they serve.
Currently, the Sisters are running a small home based daycare using the dining area of their convent – however, due to space restrictions, they are only permitted by law to accommodate 7 students.
