Matching those interested in working in agriculture with farmers and other employers

June 1, 2023

by Gloria Welton

There are many opportunities in agriculture on PEI, and again this year, students in high school and post-secondary can receive a bursary when working in agriculture.

Jobs in demand include Class 3A Drivers and class 1 Drivers, Farm Machinery Mechanics, and Farm Labourers.

Sarah Jay is the Employment Officer with the PEI Agriculture Sector Council and the promoter of Team Food Island.

“My role is to promote careers in Agriculture along with highlighting our Team Food Island Summer Student Job Bonus Program.” She is responsible for advertising all the jobs available across the Island and helping job seekers match with employers in agriculture.

This summer, the Agriculture Sector Council will again offer Class 3A Training to all agriculture workers. This four-to-five-day training program qualifies Drivers to drive farm potato trucks. “This is a popular program which allows people to be trained and ready for the season.

“Since transportation to our rural communities can be difficult, we are looking at ways to help job seekers determine how to get to the farm locations.

“The work is steady during the spring, summer and fall, and there certainly are year-round opportunities as well.”
