Margaret Stewart Ellis Home

June 23, 2021
Margaret Stewart Ellis Home.

The Margaret Stewart Ellis Home in O’Leary is a 39-bed long-term care facility with one respite bed. It is one of two provincial long-term care facilities in West Prince.

Staff titles at Margaret Stewart Ellis Home include:

  • Nurse Manager
  • Support Services Manager
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Clinical Resource Nurse
  • Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Resident Care Worker
  • Clerical Staff: Scheduling, Financial, and Payroll
  • Maintenance Staff
  • Food Service Supervisor
  • Cooks, Nutrition and Environmental Services Staff
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Recreation Manager
  • Recreation Assistant

“Employees have the opportunity to advance to other positions and to increase or reduce the number of hours they work,” says Darlene Oakes, Administrator, Rural Long Term Care, Health PEI.

Hiring needs

“We offer on-the-job placements for students in nursing programs and nutrition programs, as well as positions for students during the summer,” says Darlene.

“Our hiring needs are on-going, year-round. In particular, we are actively recruiting for all levels of nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, and RCWs) as well as support services staff (housekeeping and nutritional services).

“Job seekers should watch for postings at www.gov.pe.ca/jobspei because many opportunities come up throughout the year.”

The best way to get your foot in the door

Darlene says the best way to get your foot in the door is to apply directly for a position listed on the Health PEI website. “Many times people take a casual position to see if they like the work, and then move into temporary or permanent positions.

Volunteering

“Volunteering is suspended due to COVID-19,” says Darlene. “We are hoping to resume post-COVID-19.”

Is there a need for bilingual staff?

“At this time, we do not have positions that are labeled as bilingual,” says Darlene. “However, we continually look for ways to best serve our francophone residents, and we are open to expanding services.”

Youth and Elders in Action Bursary program

This program helps high school students gain bursary hours. “The residents really enjoy the interactions with these young people. We hope the experience is equally beneficial for the students.”

This program is currently on hold due to COVID-19.
