Many careers within the Radiography profession

May 27, 2024

by Stacy Dunn

Across Canada, Radiographers work in hospitals and imaging clinics. Radiographers perform a wide variety of duties, including:

  • performing general imaging procedures (chest, abdomen, skeletal system etc.)
  • fluoroscopy (real-time moving images of anatomy)
  • operating room and mobile exams
  • computed tomography (CT) which creates highly detailed cross-sectional images
  • mammography
  • bone mineral densitometry

UPEI offers a four-year Medical Radiography Technology program. Currently, the Radiography program accepts six students per year.

“The small class size and intimate learning environment are definite benefits,” says Cindy Fisher, Program Coordinator. “Radiography is a science-focused profession, so it is important that students have a solid foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics.”

Required first-year courses needed to apply to Radiography include chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and psychology. It is also recommended that students take a writing composition course.

The Radiography profession is suited to individuals who are interested in:

  • providing care and comfort to patients
  • working in a fast-paced environment using technologically advanced equipment
  • becoming a vital member of the healthcare team instrumental in the diagnosis and treatment of patient conditions
  • learning about human anatomy and pathology
  • becoming a life-long learner

Job titles

Students who graduate from the Radiography Program at UPEI are eligible to write a national certification exam and become Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs).

Radiography (sometimes referred to as Radiological Technology) is one of four disciplines within the MRT umbrella. The other three are nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy.

Job exposure to determine if this is a career of interest

“To explore this field and determine your interest in the work, there are opportunities to volunteer at hospitals across PEI,” Cindy says. “Interested individuals may also ask to job shadow in a Diagnostic Imaging Department.

“Also, students could gain experience through the Health Care Futures program, which provides students with a chance to gain employment within the healthcare system.”

What are the employment opportunities for Radiography?

“There is a shortage of Medical Radiation Technologists across Canada,” she says. “The need for Radiographers is great. Many facilities are offering signing bonuses and moving expenses to help recruit staff.”

Advancement opportunities

Areas for advancement include Management/Leadership roles and Educators. Graduates can also continue their studies and become trained in additional imaging fields such as MRI or Ultrasound.

How has technology changed in this profession?

“The role of technology in the Radiography Profession cannot be overstated,” Cindy says. “New technology and advances are constantly emerging. This is a great profession for those who enjoy a challenge and wish to continue to learn throughout their working career.”
