The John Howard Society of PEI is a non-profit organization that works with people at risk or with those who have come into conflict with the law to help them find stable housing, employment, and develop life skills.
While their office remains closed in response to COVID-19, staff are working remotely to continue serving clients.
Staff meet regularly with clients to identify barriers and develop a plan to help clients learn the skills to deal with these barriers with the ultimate goal of returning to work.
They can also assist clients in tax preparation and direct them to services to request a pardon for their criminal records.
Tanner MacLean is an Employment Outreach Worker at John Howard Society. He says the new restrictions have forced the development of a new model of service.
“Staff continues to serve clients over the phone. When a physical meeting is necessary, it is done quickly outside our office, with physical distancing being a priority.”
Services still being offered include employment assistance, case management, career counselling, and referrals from other organizations such as corrections and shelters. Tanner says making these services available over the phone has attracted more clients to John Howard Society.
“Offering our services over the phone has allowed staff to initiate the conversation around employment and begin the process of career counselling and job searching.”
