The 2017 Provincial PEI Home Show attracted over 100 exhibitors displaying their goods and services. Demand for home renovations and construction gears up in the spring, and many companies are hiring for the busy season ahead.
Attending the Home Show is a great way for job seekers to connect with a large number of employers under one roof.
The following employers talk about their hiring plans:
Beyond the Garden Landscaping
This company covers all aspects of the landscape trade, including seeding or sodding lawns, stonework, walkways, driveways, landscape lighting, irrigation work, wooden decks and fencing. The company is located in Rustico, and does work all over the Island.
“We have industry certified people on staff,” says Mike Gallant. “I have four certifications, and am a Red Seal Horticulturalist. This is my fifth year as Owner of the company, and I have been in the trade since 1983.”
Work usually runs from May to November. There are six people on staff, including Mike. “We don’t have a big turnover of staff, although I am always looking for new people.
“It is hard to find the right people. When I interview someone, I want to make sure they know what they are getting into. I look for people who are conscientious. If someone has the interest in learning the trade, I will train them, and pay for them to attend seminars. It is labour intensive work. We use equipment when we can, but you still have to get your hands dirty.”
Greenfoot Energy Solutions
Greenfoot Energy Solutions specializes in spray foam insulation, cellulose insulation, air source heat pumps, geothermal systems, and other ways to make buildings energy efficient. They provide services to both the residential and commercial sectors, ranging from new construction to retrofits.
“We come in and assess the building and model it through energy analysis software to show how much energy is being used and how much money will be saved if you implement one of our services,” says Roy Vandermaar. “We pride ourselves in being able to make those calculations.”
Greenfoot’s head office is based out of Moncton. To help better serve their customers on PEI, they have local technicians and a local office/showroom located along Route 2 in Milton Station, near Winsloe.
“Right now, we have over 50 employees. We hire people in the skilled trades, including Red Seal Electricians, Red Seal Refrigeration Specialists, and Carpenters with insulation and retrofit experience. We train people as well.
“All our employees are experts in their field, and their work focuses on their particular specialty. We usually have crews of two, with one expert and one helper who does the prep work and clean up.
They travel throughout the Maritimes to work. If our local staff require assistance, we will bring in staff from another location in the Maritimes; this allows us to better serve our clients’ needs when working with tight deadlines.
“The company is less than three years old, and we are growing rapidly. We hire on a regular basis. We are constantly putting more trucks on the road. For example, our spray foam crews require one sprayer who must have proven spray foam experience and another who is gaining experience. It is common for someone to start as a helper and become an expert on the job. Depending on the person’s aptitude, that could take up to five years.”

This company, located in the Bloomfield Industrial Park, has been in operation for 26 years. It has been under new ownership for four years. They design, build, and finish stairways in their shop, and install in locations across the Maritimes and Canada.
Work is year-round, and most work is inside. Some travel may be involved to tear out old stairs and install the new ones.
Five people are employed: an Installer, Project Manager, and Labourers. “We hire occasionally, and we hope to hire some students this summer,” says Glen Doucette.
“We look for trade skills in woodworking. We also look for people who are interested in the woodworking field, who will work hard, and who are energetic, reliable, and willing to learn our methods.”
