Retirements and turnover
Patricia Bell, Staffing Officer at Holland College, says Holland College has a voluntary turnover rate of about 2.5 percent, not counting retirees. There is more turnover in part-time positions.
Patricia says there is a steady increase in the number of retirees. “Last year, 26 people retired from Holland College, which is the largest number we have seen.”
“Wages and benefits for staff are covered under four collective agreements. Some positions are not unionized but fall under Terms and Conditions of Employment.”
“Bilingualism is not required, but we consider it an asset in certain positions,” says Patricia.
Education and training requirements
Education requirements vary, depending on the position. “For example, a Learning Manager in our Nursing program must be an RN.”
“Educational development assistance may be available to employees who want to further their education.”
“Our biggest initiative is our United Way campaign. This year, the college community raised $20,379.” Many programs work with local partners on various projects that build students’ skills and benefit the community.
“We’ve been lucky to have found really great staff to replace the 26 people who retired last year,” says Patricia. “Hiring has been ongoing throughout the year with the majority of the hiring happening during the summer months. Certain term positions are more difficult to fill.
“Holland College is a great place to work, and has a reputation for being a good employer offering excellent benefits. Employees have a desire to be a member of the organization, and are dedicated to doing the very best job possible to contribute to the success of Holland College.
“I think the reason staff stay with Holland College is because of the opportunities to grow in their careers, further their education, move up in the organization, and get great wages and benefits.”
Applications to Holland College can be made online or in person. “All job openings are posted online. For harder to fill positions we may also use external job posting sites, industry specific publications, newspapers, and social media.”
Resumés are short-listed based on the requirements of the position. Then, a list of applicants to interview is narrowed down.
Potential employees can expect questions about their education and experience, their people skills, and why they want to work at Holland College. “That conversation gives us an idea of how much they know about our organization. In any positon you apply for, it’s important to show that you’ve done your homework,” says Patricia.
Depending on the position, applicants may be tested to evaluate their skills or asked to do a presentation as part of the interview process. After the interview, candidates are rated. Then the interview panel chooses the top candidate for the position and HR will check references.”
“To be successful in the interview process, be clear in your cover letter and resumé about how the qualifications asked for in the job posting match your qualifications. We don’t want to go looking for your information, or guess or assume.”
