There are two provincial long-term care facilities in West Prince.
The Margaret Stewart Ellis Home in O’Leary is a 39-bed long-term care facility with one respite bed.
Maplewood Manor in Alberton is a 48-bed long-term care facility with one respite bed.
Staff titles at both locations include:
- Nurse Manager
- Clinical Resource Registered Nurse
- Licensed Practical Nurse
- Resident Care Worker
- Clerical Staff: Scheduling, Financial, and Nursing Clerks
- Maintenance Staff: Generalists, Carpenters, Plumbers, and Electricians
- Cooks, Nutrition and Environmental Services Staff
- Occupational Therapist and OT Assistant
“Employees have the opportunity to advance to other positions and to increase or reduce the number of hours they work,” says Darlene Oakes, Administrator, Rural Long Term Care, Health PEI.
“We offer on-the-job placements for students in nursing, Resident Care Worker, and nutrition programs, as well as positions for students during the summer,” says Darlene.
“Our hiring needs are on-going, year-round. We are currently recruiting all levels of nursing staff, as well as support service workers (Housekeepers and Nutrition Services).
“Job seekers should watch for postings at www.gov.pe.ca/jobspei because many opportunities come up throughout the year.”
The best way to get your foot in the door
Darlene says the best way to get your foot in the door is to apply directly for a position listed on the Health PEI website.
“Many times, people take a casual position to see if they like the work, and then move into temporary or permanent positions.”
“Volunteering is suspended due to COVID-19,” says Darlene. ”We are hoping to resume post-COVID-19.”
Is there a need for bilingual staff?
“We are hoping to open a bilingual household for French-speaking residents,” Darlene says about Maplewood Manor. “We are working with current staff to determine who is able and interested in working in a bilingual household. We also anticipate hiring new staff who are bilingual.
“At this time, we do not have positions that are labeled as bilingual,” she says about Margaret Stewart Ellis Home. “However, we continually look for ways to best serve our francophone residents, and we are open to expanding services.”
Youth and Elders in Action Bursary program
This program helps high school students gain bursary hours. “The residents really enjoy the interactions with these young people. We hope the experience is equally beneficial for the students. This program is currently on hold due to COVID-19.
