Hiring for casual correctional officer positions is ongoing

June 20, 2020

The PEI Department of Justice and Public Safety employs Probation Officers, Outreach Workers, Victim Services Workers, Program Officers, Nurses, Social Workers, and Therapists.

“Most job openings are for Correctional Officers,” says Ron Taylor, Manager of Corrections Services.  “Lately, we have been having difficulty filling those positions.  The baby boomers are retiring, and there are not enough younger people to replace them.”

Casual Correctional Officers provide security, supervise offenders, and support a variety of programs and services for offenders within a correctional centre.

“We look for people with common sense and the ability to talk to people,” says Ron.  “Our focus is rehabilitative, not punitive.  We try to help people.”

Ron’s tips for applying

  1. Read the job ad carefully.  On the application, clearly demonstrate how you meet the qualifications listed.
  2. Learn about the employer and what they do.
  3. Think about the skills you learned and how they could transfer to a job with Corrections.
