Fitzpatrick & Company is a full-service accounting firm that has been in operation since 2008. The assurance division handles audits, reviews and other financial statement preparation. The advisory division handles business planning, tax planning, and refinancing. The staff of over 30 includes 12 Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs).
“Our hiring is typically done in spring, after our busy tax season, which is January to May,” says Jamie Arsenault. “We hire two to three people a year. They are either accounting technicians doing day-to-day bookkeeping, or individuals interested in taking the CPA program.
“Six Chinese, one Vietnamese, and one Brazilian newcomer work with us now. We rely on them to understand the cultures of newcomers, and that has helped our company better communicate in those communities.”
CPA students work at the firm while participating in the 30-month program to earn their professional accountant designation.
The company has found success through the Co-operative program at UPEI. Jamie says some of those students have worked through the summer, gained full-time employment after graduation, and earned their CPA designation.
Community involvement and advancement opportunities
“Volunteer experience doing financial statements or other activities looks good on a resumé,” Jamie says. “It shows they are building skills and networking at the same time.”
“Some of our Accounting technicians have worked towards becoming CPAs. When an employee is a good fit with our company, there is room to move up.” For more information about Fitzpatrick & Company, visit www.fitzandco.ca.
