The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy & Safe Communities promotes collaboration across sectors to make our communities healthier and safer places to live.

The learning opportunities offered through the ASI are intended to build participants’ capacity to positively impact the determinants of health in their communities, and more broadly in their region, province and country. Evidence-based research demonstrates action on the determinants is necessary to address health inequalities and to build healthy, safe, inclusive and sustainable communities.

The determinants framework expressly recognizes the importance to health of factors such as income and social status; education and literacy; employment and working conditions; gender; and social environments – including civic and community institutions – most of the same factors affecting the ability of women to fully participate in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
