An employee, if eligible, is entitled to temporary leaves of absence called special leaves. An eligible employee who requests a special leave must be granted that leave by the employer. While on special leave, the employee continues to be employed by the employer.
Sick leave allows the employee to be absent from work due to non-work related illness or injury. An employee who is continuously employed with the same employer from between three months and five years are entitled to three unpaid sick days per year. After five years of continuous employment with the same employer, an employee is entitled to three unpaid sick days and one paid sick day per year.
An employee is eligible for the unpaid leave when employed continuously for at least six months by the same employer. The leave allows the employee to care for a member of the employee’s immediate or extended family. Once eligible, the employee is entitled to an unpaid absence of up to three unpaid days per 12 calendar month period. The employee must inform the employer about the anticipated start date and length of the leave.
An employee is eligible for the leave when a member of the family dies. An employee is entitled to one paid day and up to two unpaid days of leave if the person who has died is a member of the employee’s immediate family. Members of the employee’s immediate family are a spouse, parent, sibling or child.
An employee is entitled up to three unpaid days if the person who has died is a member of the employee’s extended family. Members of the employee’s extended family are grandparents, grandchildren, in-laws, uncles, and aunts.
A paid day of bereavement is an average day’s pay for the employee. The employee’s paid vacation is extended by one day if the paid day of bereavement occurs during the employee’s paid vacation.
