The cultivated finfish industry provides year round employment for Islanders.
The finfish aquaculture sector on PEI has three freshwater hatcheries involved in salmonid production. In addition, there is one grow-out operation for halibut. Salmon and rainbow trout hatcheries on PEI supply eggs, fingerlings, fry and smolt for grow-out at sites in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador.
There are two Atlantic salmon facilities and one rainbow trout facility. There is also a land-based halibut grow-out facility that supplies the local food service market.
PEI has four research facilities specializing in finfish and shellfish aquaculture: the Atlantic Veterinary College, Aqua Bounty Technologies, Novartis Animal Health, and the Centre for Aquaculture Technologies Canada.
