Construction Association of PEI

The Construction Association of PEI (CAPEI) continues to update their website www.IslandBuilder.ca which features a job board and a list of programs for employers and job seekers. The HR Manager will meet with construction businesses, post open positions for them, and meet with job seekers.

CAPEI Trades Training

CAPEI Youth in Trades is sponsored by the Construction Association of PEI and is funded in part by Employment and Social Development Canada. The program is for participants ages 16 to 30 years old. Held in Charlottetown, it includes 30 hours per week for eight weeks of classroom/shop time, safety training, and tiny home builds. A travel allowance is available.

Participants are working on the Tiny Homes Initiative, which is a partnership between CAPEI and the Province of PEI. They are paid minimum wage (not insurable) for the classroom portion of the program. They also receive a 14-week paid entry-level work placement in the construction industry. Hours are insurable and the wage is set by the employer.

CAPEI also delivers the Discover Carpentry program. Participants must be 18 to 45 years old, out of school, or working 20 hours or less a week, and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Certifications are provided for Safety Training. Held in Charlottetown, it includes 30 hours per week for eight weeks of classroom/shop time, safety training, and tiny home builds. A travel allowance is available. The Provincial Government of PEI-SkillsPEI funds this program.

The Skilled Newcomer in Construction program is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada. Participants must be 18 to 45 years old, out of school, or working 20 hours or less a week. They must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or hold a valid open work permit. Their skills/education must have been obtained in their home country. Certifications are provided for Safety Training. Classroom time is not paid. They will be matched with an employer for a work experience component after the classroom/shop time. This program is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada.

The Construction Association of PEI offers the following courses that generally run once a month and year-round:

  • Fall Protection Training
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • Elevating Work Platform (EWP) Training (e.g. scissor lifts, zoom boom, cherry pickers)
  • CPR and Emergency First Aid Training
  • WHMIS training
