Bell Aliant Centre provides training for employment opportunities

May 2, 2024

by Ethan Paquet

Bell Aliant Centre, located in Charlottetown, is a multi-purpose facility covering over 160,000 square feet. It contains an aquatics facility, two ice surfaces, meeting rooms, and more. With the support of its tenants, the facility provides a variety of recreational services, events, summer camps, and programs.

Hiring needs

“Right now, we are looking for Camp Counsellors for our summer camps,” says Emily Swaine, Aquatics Department Manager. “We are also actively hiring Lifeguards and Swim Instructors, as well as a Sanitation Technician.”

Camp Counsellors work at one of the five-day camps offered in July and August, where they help lead the programming for children ages five through 12.

Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are responsible for preventing accidents using sound judgment and fast decision-making skills.

“For these positions, we require specific training, which is offered through our facility. If someone is interested in working with us, we can put them on the right path to work towards that qualification.”

Sanitation Technicians are part of the cleaning crew and are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities while working closely with other department staff to help with general maintenance needs.

“This is a casual, part-time role with the possibility of becoming full-time. Qualifications include Grade 12 or equivalent, along with WHMIS certification. Again, if someone is interested in this job but does not have that certification, we can provide training if needed.”

Wages and benefits

The wage for Camp Counsellors is $15.40 per hour. Lifeguards and Swim Instructors start at $17 per hour. For the Sanitation Technician role, the wage starts at $18.50 per hour.

“For Sanitation Technicians, if that role becomes full-time, we offer a package that includes health and dental benefits. Full-time work would lead to eligibility for health and dental benefits.”

How to apply

“When it comes to choosing the right candidate, we are looking for individuals who are friendly and sociable. A lot of people come through our facility each day, so our staff must be good with people. My advice to those looking to stand out is to make note on their application about how they can be a good match for this environment.”

Current job openings can be found online on the Bell Aliant Centre website. Those interested in applying can send their resumé and cover letter to jobs@bellaliantcentre.ca, Emily says.
