In February, SkillsPEI held a job fair at the Mill River Resort in O’Leary. Many employers and recruiters were available to talk with job seekers.
SkillsPEI Program Officers were on hand to answer job seekers’ questions about getting hired and further training, and to help employers find out about programs that can help them hire employees.

Rodd Mill River – O'Leary
Jobs: Housekeepers, Food and Beverage Servers, Banquet Porter, Dining Room Servers, Bartenders, Cooks, Line Cooks, Front Desk Agents, Estheticians, and staff for the Aquaplex swimming centre. Full-time and part-time work is available.
“The season runs from the middle of May until the middle of October,” says Diane Noye.
“At peak season, we have about 100 staff of various ages. This year, there are more job openings than in other years.
“We look for people who are team players, willing to learn the hospitality industry, can work flexible hours, are willing to work in a fast-paced setting, and have the desire to provide exceptional service to our visiting guests.”

Trout River Industries – Coleman

“There are many job options and opportunities as we continue to grow,” says Tracey Wadman.
The company manufactures live bottom trailers that are sold around the world.
They offer full-time, year-round work in rural PEI. In the last four years, they have more than doubled the number of staff, and now have over 80 employees.
About 80 percent of the employees are local.

Work starts as early as the last week in April, and could go until December. There are opportunities for students to work part-time during the school year, and full-time in the summer. There is flexibility with work hours to suit the needs of the staff. The starting wage is $12 per hour, plus four percent vacation pay.

Royal Star Foods Ltd. – Jude’s Point Rd., Tignish
Jobs: Fish Plant Workers, Fork Lift Operators for cold storage, Fish Plant Labourers.
Royal Star Foods is accepting applications to fill vacancies in these positions on various work shifts. The work season usually runs from May 1st until mid-December. During peak season, the plant employs 300 people.
The company is having difficulty finding Fish Plant Workers and Labourers. Other positions at Royal Star include Power Engineers, Maintenance, Production Supervisors, Quality Control Staff, Retail Clerks, Receptionist, Payroll and Accounting Clerks, Department Managers, and Truck Drivers.
“It’s a great opportunity for anyone in high school, university or college,” says Cheryl DesRoches. “They can work part-time or full-time.”
Jobs: Gas Bar Manager, Waiter, Waitress, and Cook for the restaurant. There are also job opportunities for the summer months in the food store.
The Co-op is owned and operated by about 4,000 active members, and employs up to 130 adults and students.
The co-op has expanded to include a grocery store, lunch bar, family fashions, furniture, home decor, garden centre, gas bar, electronics, home heating, sawmill, feedmill, and poultry plant. It also owns two Home Hardware Building Centres in Tignish and Alberton, and one Hardware Store in O’Leary.
