Make a Wish Canada is one of 40 international affiliates that grant wishes for children in 50 countries on six continents. They grant life-changing wishes for children with a critical illness, and work to grant the wish of every single eligible child in Canada.
“We are child-focused, honest, transparent and respectful,” says Alyssa Melnyk, Volunteer Coordinator for Make a Wish Canada in the four Atlantic provinces.
“The impacts of the wishes that we deliver are life-changing, and are felt physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are innovative and need to be creative to make some wishes happen. We are a diverse group of people working together towards a common goal. We have steadily been growing our volunteer program.”
- Wish granting. Helping to make wishes and dreams come true for kids on PEI. “There are currently nine kids on PEI waiting for their wishes, and we need help.”
- Event volunteering. “We are a not-for-profit and cannot grant wishes without raising money. We host events to fundraise so we can in turn grant those wishes.” Volunteers attend events and help support the day however they choose to sign up for. One event is Trees of Joy, which is held in December. Corporations are paired with a wish kid to decorate a tree according to the child’s wishes, and then enjoy a dinner together. “We need help with setting up and decorating, support where needed during the event, and then with tearing things down after the event.”
Volunteers need to be willing to be involved in two things per year, based on the need and the position you volunteer for.
“You will gain a sense of community and feel part of the volunteer family. You will also have the opportunity to take more training such as trauma, grief, and self-care, about the different types of wishes we fulfill, and more. We are currently creating training specific to what it looks like when we send a kid to Disney World.”
