ParaSport and Recreation PEI provides recreation and sport opportunities for individuals with a physical disability.
“On PEI, our main goal is to increase participation in physical activities for people with a physical disability, advocate for sport accessibility, and provide access to adaptive equipment,” says Vivian Nguyen, Program Coordinator.
Members and athletes can choose either competitive or recreational sport programs.
“Examples of competitive sport programs are wheelchair basketball, sledge hockey, and wheelchair rugby.
“Recreational opportunities include paracycling, adult fitness program, wheelchair or blind curling, two swimming programs for youth from five to 17 years old called Aqua-Abilities and ParaFit, and a new sport to PEI called boccia.”
Volunteer opportunities
ParaSport and Recreation PEI is looking for volunteers to fill the following positions:
- Parafit Assistant Instructors – positions available immediately until the end of May
- Boccia Program Volunteer – positions available from April to June
- Para Cycling Pilot – positions available from June to September
Vivian says the efforts of volunteers make ParaSport and Recreation PEI programs a success. “Volunteers don’t need a lot of experience with the sport or with working with people with disabilities. If there is a willingness to volunteer, we will provide the necessary training. All you need is good communication skills.”
ParaSport and Recreation PEI provides volunteers with the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, experience new sports, and of course, have some fun.
Some other volunteer positions that are offered throughout the year include:
- Coach
- Manager
- Program Aid/Support
- Event Volunteer – Various positions
