Variety of education
“Some staff have high school education and others have college or university education. For sales positions, it’s more about the person’s customer service skills and having a proven track record in previous employment dealing with the public. The better your interpersonal skills, the more successful you will be.”
Newly hired salespeople receive three weeks of initial training and are expected to keep up daily with new product trends and information.
“Technicians require automotive education before they are hired. We offer on-the-job training for automotive technology students and apprentices. Training on new technology is provided by the manufacturer almost on a monthly basis.”
Positions in demand
“Dealerships are always competing to find repair technicians with a high level of training and skill set. They are highly sought after.”
They also look for Product Specialists, whose role is to spend time with customers to get to know what vehicle best suits them. The job requires excellent interpersonal skills and knowledge of social media.
“I moved up through the ranks from washing cars to Service Advisor to Sales to Sales Manager to being lucky enough to be in my present position,” says Adam.
“Staff who demonstrate a good attitude and willingness to learn the business can move up rather quickly. Recently, three of our detailers moved on to technician positions. It’s a good way for someone to get their foot in the door. Some of our detailers have become Service Advisors and Product Specialists.”
