The 17th annual Tourism Job Fair, presented by the Tourism Industry Association of PEI, was held in Charlottetown recently. It was a chance for job seekers to meet with employers and find out more about jobs in the industry.
Another Tourism Job Fair will be held April 21, 10 am to 2 pm, at the North Rustico Lions Club.
A transportation service for employees living in Charlottetown and working in Cavendish, New Glasgow, North Rustico or Stanley Bridge will run between June 22 and September 3. For more information on the service, call Prince Edward Tours at 902-566-5259 or [email protected].
The Tourism Job Fair was funded in whole or in part through the Canada/PEI labour market agreements.
Some employers at the Tourism Job Fair looking for staff:
TOURSEC & APPS Integrated Security Solutions
Jobs: 75 positions for Security Guards
APPS Integrated Security Solutions operates year-round employing uniformed officers and loss prevention officers.
The sister company TOURSEC has been in operation for over 12 years, providing unformed security to events across Atlantic Canada. TOURSEC can service all sizes and types of events, from intimate gatherings to shows with 100,000 in attendance.
“We cover access control, age of majority screening, crowd control, stage pit crews, special response teams, and sometimes artist transport/close protection details, to name a few,” says Crystle Wilson.
“Our staff carry out many different roles, which involve different skill levels. TOURSEC has steadily built a reputation of delivering services in excess of the typical for clients committed to safety.
“Safety is our number one priority. Our certified instructors train staff to perform at many different levels. The programs TOURSEC teaches are the same you find in an academy setting, such as Verbal Tactics, Defensive Tactics, Special Response Teams, Critical Incident Stress Management, and Emergency Management Training.
“The instructors are equally qualified. They have taught in academies, colleges, and our own facility. They are highly respected in the training community.
“We are happy to give people interested in the field a chance. If you don’t have a background in this line of work, we will train.
“Employees range from 18 to 60 years of age.”
Gahan House, Murphy Hospitality Group, Charlottetown
Jobs at Murphy Hospitality Group: Line Cooks, Prep Cooks, Pastry Cooks, Sous Chefs, Dishwashers, Manager, Bartenders, Servers, Host, Front Desk, Guest Service, Housekeepers, Brewery Production Hands, Beer Guides-Retail
“Across all the Murphy Hospitality Group properties, we are hiring about 100 to 200 new staff,” says Alex Youland. At Gahan House, they will hire about 10 to 15 extra seasonal staff for the kitchen and front of house.
“The most challenging positions to fill are in the kitchen. At Murphy Hospitality Group, we have worked hard over the years to develop training and growth opportunities for our cooks. We want them to see that this is an industry where they can turn a job into a career.
“But there is always turnover in front and back of house, as some team members may be returning to school, taking a job in their field of study, or looking for a change of industry. However, many of our seasonal hires have been able to stay on with the company during the year.”

The Holman Grand, Charlottetown
Jobs: Guest Services Agent, Night Auditor, Server, Host, Cook, Housekeeper, Retail Associate, Custodian
The hotel has 80 guest rooms and suites in downtown Charlottetown, as well as Redwater Rustic Grille Restaurant, Grand Senses Spa, fitness centre, pool and hot tub, and banquet space.
“In the last few years, we have had a very stable number of people working for us,” says Joshua Hooper.
Ten staff work on the front desk, which is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 20 to 30 in housekeeping, 20 more working in the restaurant, and 20 at the spa.
“We are hiring a few more people for the summer, including students, but we look mostly for people willing to work year-round. One of the best things about working for the Holman Grand is that we are busy year-round.
“The most challenging position to fill is the Guest Services agent who works at the front desk. They must be able to fit in well with our employees, interact with visitors and guests, be able to multitask in a busy environment, and be a self-starter who is willing to help in other areas around the hotel during quieter times.”
