The RCMP is recruiting people who enjoy collaborating with diverse communities, are physically fit, and have strong leadership abilities.

All applicants must reflect the core values of the RCMP. These include integrity, honesty, professionalism, compassion, respect, and accountability.

Constable Ellen Peters is the new Recruiter for the RCMP on PEI. She has worked with the RCMP for 15 years, mostly in general policing.

“We have more than 29,000 employees across the country, including various front-line workers and public service staff who support operations,” says Constable Peters.

The basic requirements to apply to become an RCMP officer

• speak English or French – additional languages are a bonus
• at least 18 years old
• have a driver’s license
• grade 12 or equivalent such as a GED certificate.

“I tell students during school presentations if they are considering a career with the RCMP to be mindful of what they post on social media.

“We check media accounts going back 10 years. So, if you apply when you are 25 years old, we go back 10 years and look at friends and associates, character references, employment, alcohol and drug use, and social media (Internet).”

Application steps

Step One: Search online for How to become an RCMP officer and follow the steps provided.

Step Two:Once you have been screened in, you will be invited to attend a career presentation and write the RCMP entrance exam.

Step Three: Extensive paperwork and documents as requested by the RCMP.

Step Four: Interviews to determine core values, personality traits, and judgment required of an RCMP officer.

Step Five: A polygraph examination verifying honesty and former and present employer and references background check.

Step Six: A RCMP-designated physician and psychologist health assessment to receive a medical clearance.

Step Seven: The last step in the application process is a field investigation and security assessment. If successful, you will receive security clearance.

Once you have passed all the application and assessment steps you will be contacted to attend the RCMP cadet training program in Regina, Saskatchewan. The training is about six months long. All expenses are covered and you receive an allowance while undergoing training. It is very mentally and emotionally challenging to prepare for the real world of policing.

During the first six months on the job, you will be assigned a field coach trainer who will help you adjust from training to the real world of policing. After the six months, there is a two-year probation period.

After completing the training, you will be assigned to a job posting in Canada. The RCMP will pay for your trip home to pack your belongings and will pay for you and your family to move to your first detachment.

Salary rates gradually increase. The base salary for a Junior Constable is currently $106,000.
