The Public Schools Branch (PSB) serves more than 19,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and employs more than 4,000 people across PEI.
The 56 schools offer a variety of employment opportunities, including permanent, casual, and substitute positions. Many open positions are the result of a high number of retirements this past year.
Types of jobs PSB offers:
- Educational Assistant
- Youth Service Worker
- Administrative Assistant
- Bus Driver
“For Certified Teachers, the requirements are a Bachelor of Education (BEd) and a PEI Teacher’s Certificate from the Registrar at the Department of Education and Early Years,” says Jennifer Muncaster, Human Resources Officer with the PSB.
“A Certified Substitute Teacher is required to have a BEd and a PEI Teacher’s Certificate. A Non-Certified Substitute Teacher does not need a BEd but does need one year of post-secondary education and experience working with youth.”
Certified and Non-Certified Substitute Teachers can obtain a permit from the Registrar at the Department of Education and Early Years.
“The Registrar is a separate process from us, but PSB will guide you through the process. The education requirement used to be two years of post-secondary, but the demand for substitute teachers is so high, the requirement was reduced to one year.”
Regular Educational Assistants need a diploma in Human Services or equivalent. They work with children in academic support, medical support, or behavioral support. “The Registrar looks at equivalencies and may grant Regular Authorization from the Department of Education.
“Non-Certified Substitute EAs must have Grade 12 or GED and experience working with children or youth,” Jennifer says. “Experience working with children with special needs is helpful. They must get Authorization from the Registrar, either regular authorized EA or Sub Only Authorized EA before can work in the schools.”
Youth Service Workers and Casual Youth Service Workers need a Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent, and do not need to go through the Registrar. “They help students with life skills and may counsel on getting jobs and more.”
Cleaners and Custodians need Grade 12 or a GED to get permanent work with the PSB. “There is quite a need in this area. We recently began hiring Casuals without their Grade 12 or GED and looked at previous cleaning experience as an asset. They also will consider demonstrated equivalencies.”
Bus Drivers and Substitute Bus Drivers are in demand at PSB as well. They need Grade 12 or a GED and a valid Canadian drivers’ license (or equivalent license from a reciprocal country) for at least five years. They also need a valid Class 2A driver’s license and completion of an approved bus driver training program.
“We partner with SkillsPEI to help with the three-week training,” Jennifer says. “To qualify to take the training, they must pass an interview and medical exam, vision test, driver’s abstract, and background criminal check. After collecting other required documents, they are sent to SkillsPEI to see if they qualify for funding for training. Casual Bus Drivers are getting hired quickly for permanent positions.”
“If you are having difficulty filling out the application, please call us and we can help you. You can also pick up paper copies of the application at our offices in Summerside and Stratford,” she says. “We prefer that you create an account on our website so you can apply for jobs as they come up. You will find the online application easy to use once you have your online application and uploaded resumé and cover letter in place.”
Jennifer advises applicants to make sure their resumé is updated and specific to the job they are applying for. “Draw our attention to the qualifications that make you a great candidate for that job.”
The PSB screens applications after they have been accepted. Successful applicants who meet the qualifications and requirements will be called in for an interview within a week or two. They are asked to provide references at the interview. “We do a fast turnaround. If you pass this process, we send you the required documentation you need to complete the hiring process.”
