North Rustico Food Market, Main Street, North Rustico
It’s been a year since CO-OP Atlantic sold several of its Atlantic Canadian stores to Sobeys.
The grocery chain rebranded two PEI locations – Walker Drive in Charlottetown and Main Street in North Rustico – Foodland and Clover Farm, respectively.
In February 2016, Jeff Doucette purchased North Rustico Clover Farm from Sobeys, and changed the name to North Rustico Food Market. The independently-owned store ensures there will continue to be a grocery store in the centre of North Rustico, which the town has had for 40 or 50 years.

From fall to winter, 10 or 11 employees work at the store. The number jumps to around 20 people in the spring and summer. Most work part-time.
The age range of the employees is early 20s to late 50s. New hires start at minimum wage.
“Summer is our busy time, and I am most likely to hire people then,” says Jeff. “I advertise jobs on the Job Bank. I am looking for cashiers and clerks. Resumés can be emailed or dropped off at the store.”
Jeff provides in-house training to staff. He is open to job shadowing under the right circumstances.
“Work involves a lot of standing and some heavy lifting. It’s best to wear comfortable shoes.”

“I like to see easy-going applicants with positive attitudes and customer service skills who are reliable and punctual.
“I see the job interview as a conversation. I get a good sense of the person’s personality when I see them face to face. I ask what their extracurricular activities are, and how they plan to schedule work around these activities.”
“For most people, shopping at the grocery store is more of a social outing,” Jeff says. “Our staff need to be able to carry on a comfortable conversation with customers.”
