Island Weigh 95, Inc., PEIs Dockside Monitoring Co. (since 1995)
Tammy Arsenault, President
Island Weigh 95, Inc., PEI’s Dockside Monitoring company, is looking for individuals to work as Dockside Observers at various docks across PEI for the 2017 season.
“We are taking names of individuals who may be interested in taking our free one-week in-classroom training course, which is usually offered in February/November each year as needed,” says Tammy Arsenault. “Courses will be offered in Charlottetown and in Tignish.”
In addition, on-the-job training will be provided by a trained Dockside Observer to help new hires become familiar with the species and the paper work required.
About the company
The Dockside Monitoring program started in the early 1990s, and now employs 25 to 30 Dockside Observers per year. Dockside Monitoring records help determine when quota allocations for specified species have been reached. The information collected is also used by biologists to help gauge the health of fish stocks.
Prior to arriving at the harbour with their catch, fishers are required to call a monitoring company to arrange to have a Dockside Observer observe and record all fish landings. Dockside Observers are also required to check the Captains’ log books before giving permission to unload.
Fish landings are recorded for Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for any fishery that requires Dockside Monitoring services, such as snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, ground fish, herring, bluefin tuna, and whelk. “As fisheries are sometimes unpredictable, there is a possibility in the future of more species being put on quotas, and if so, this will turn into more permanent full-time work,” says Tammy.
Interested candidates must have:
- Valid driver’s license
- Reliable vehicle
- Proof of grade 12 or equivalent
- Security clearance, which is done from the Island Weigh 95 Inc. office and can take up to six months to receive
Individuals must NOT have had a fisher’s registration card (deckhand) in the same calendar year that they are designated as a Dockside Observer.
“We are looking for individuals who will be available for on-call work from Victoria to East Point from August to late fall, and from Victoria to North Cape from late June to late fall. Because this work is sporadic and requires staff to be on-call, we find that individuals whom are semi-retired or retired are the right fit for this part-time job.
“We need employees who are flexible enough to work casual hours at any time during the busy season. Pay is minimum wage plus mileage.”
