There are two provincial long-term care facilities in West Prince.
The Margaret Stewart Ellis Home in O’Leary is a 40-bed long-term care facility with one respite bed.
Maplewood Manor in Alberton is a 48-bed long-term care facility with one respite bed.
Staff titles at both locations include:
- Nurse Manager
- Clinical Resource Registered Nurse
- Licensed Practical Nurse
- Resident Care Worker
- Clerical Staff: Scheduling, Financial, and Nursing Clerks
- Maintenance Staff: Generalists, Carpenters, Plumbers, and Electricians
- Cooks, Nutrition and Environmental Services Staff
- Occupational Therapist and OT Assistant
“Employees have the opportunity to advance to other positions and to increase or reduce the amount of hours they work,” says Darlene Oakes, Health PEI Administrator.
“We offer on-the-job placements for students in nursing, Resident Care Worker, and nutrition programs, as well as positions for students during the summer,” says Darlene.
“Our hiring needs are on-going, year-round. In particular, we are actively recruiting for Registered Nurses, which are difficult to fill.
“Job seekers should watch for postings at www.gov.pe.ca/jobspei because many opportunities come up throughout the year.”
The best way to get your foot in the door
Darlene says the best way to get your foot in the door is to apply directly for a position listed on the website. “Many times people take a casual position to see if they like the work, and then move into temporary or permanent positions.
“People who would like to arrange job shadowing or informational interviews are welcome to telephone and speak with the manager of whatever department they are interested in.”
“Volunteering is an option,” says Darlene. “Students of all ages come to our facility. School age children come in to read with the residents as part of an arrangement with local schools. Girl Guide meetings are held at each site, where some of our residents are honorary Girl Guide leaders.”
Is there a need for bilingual staff?
“At this time we do not have positions that are labeled as bilingual,” says Darlene. “However, we continually look for ways to best serve our francophone residents, and we are open to expanding services.”
Youth and Elders in Action Bursary program
This program helps high schools students gain bursary hours. “The residents really enjoy the interactions with these young people. We hope the experience is equally beneficial for the students.”
