Fastenal is an international distribution company specializing in inventory management and serves the wholesale business-to-business (B2B) sector.
The company sells products and solutions such as fasteners, safety gear, masks, chemicals, hydraulics, welding, and power transmission that keep a business functioning.
There are more than 3,000 business locations in over 25 countries in North America, Asia, and Europe. There are also 1,600 locations set up at business sites.
“Not only do we supply wholesale industrial and construction products, we also offer customer solutions for their operations and inventory management,” says Allyana Alvarez, Regional Recruiter with Fastenal Canada.
“One of our many customer solutions is our technology. We make our own vending machines, which hold our products at our customer sites. The vending machines help our customers with inventory management. If a product runs low, Fastenal gets a notification and sends an employee to fill the machine, so that the customer always has access to what they need in their daily operations.”
About the staff
There are over 20,000 employees around the globe, and the Charlottetown location has eight employees.
“There are a lot of different avenues with Fastenal: operations, management, project management, or advanced sales – the opportunities are there.
There are over 520 specialist occupations within the company. “We have over 350 supply chain professionals – specialists and consultants who focus on customer service. We also have staff who focus on project management, helping our customers run their operations more efficiently.”
“When you start a career with Fastenal, we will provide you with full training for your current role and in your future roles,” says Allyana.
The company trains its employees internally. The Fastenal School of Business offers over 400 professional courses.
“I started with Fastenal in July 2022, and I saw right away their investment and belief in their people. They want to develop their employees from the ground up.”
Why join Fastenal?
“Fastenal takes the time to invest in, develop, and train their employees. Ninety-five percent of our leadership roles started at entry-level positions and were promoted from within.
“We are a de-centralized company. All employees have the freedom to make their own decisions without being micromanaged.
“Many employees have been with the company long-term, from 10 to 40 years. That shows the company culture – how we encourage professional growth, and how we believe in our employees. It is important for our employees to hold on to the mindset to think big and create opportunities for ourselves.
“Because employees are not being micromanaged or closely supervised, we need to trust our employees to do the right thing.
“Innovation is big. We are very big on customer solutions and thinking outside the box to see where else we can add value for our customers.
“Teamwork is important. We are a very big company with a huge platform where we can communicate with other employees at locations around the world. As an employee, you get all the resources and tools you need to succeed in your role.”
Starting at Fastenal
Fastenal hires post-secondary students to work part-time while still in school and grow and learn different aspects of the company.
“Many people start out as a customer supply chain representative. They learn about the company and how we do receiving, visit customers, and discover their interests.
“After they graduate, we can offer opportunities that suit their interests. If they are interested in logistics, we can steer them towards operations, and if it is marketing, they can go in the direction of domestic, international, and government sales. We have many opportunities for everyone.”
Students interested in an internship or part-time positions need a valid driver’s license so that they can visit the customer’s site in a company vehicle. They also need to be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
