After high school, Alyssa Perry went to UPEI and took two years of Biology and Psychology, and then realized she needed to go in another direction.
“I decided I wanted a more hands-on experience,” says Alyssa.
She had work experience as a Service Advisor at a busy car dealership. “That job taught me a lot about dealing with people.
“I have always wanted to help people,” says Alyssa. Undecided, she applied for both the LPN program at Holland College and the Community Service Worker program at Academy of Learning College. She was accepted first by Academy of Learning, and she took that as a sign for what direction to go.
The program is delivered at the Academy of Learning College locations in Charlottetown and Summerside. A portion of the class is taken online, with students from all over the country. Alyssa could communicate with the virtual instructor and her classmates in real time through a chat system. “It was a really fun way to learn,” says Alyssa.
She was so dedicated to her studies, she finished the program ahead of schedule. Then she went on to a four-week job placement at Queens County Residential Services in Charlottetown. After graduation, she was immediately hired to work full-time there.
Alyssa works one-on-one or in small groups with people with intellectual disabilities.
She teaches life skills, cooking, and other activities, as well as taking clients on outings.
“I have found my niche, and I really love this job,” says Alyssa.
