Human Services program a welcoming return for local employer
by Ruby Arsenault
Holland College West Prince Campus is once again offering the Human Services program, starting in the fall of 2023. “Graduates of this program will greatly benefit Community Inclusions Ltd.”, says HR Coordinator Rushell MacDonald.
“We are happy to hear that the Human Services program is to be offered again in West Prince this fall. We hope that this program will become a regular part of the programming offered here in West Prince for the foreseeable future.
“We have been successful in hiring several graduates of the program as Community Support workers and Residential Support Workers. With our recent growth and more anticipated to come soon, we will continue to search for more qualified staff for our vocational, employment, and residential locations across West Prince.”
“There is a great need for this program in our area, not just for our organization, but for other services as well. A student who completes the Human Services program has excellent opportunities ahead for them to be part of much-needed services.”
“Students in the West Prince area can complete their practicums close to home and within the communities they are familiar with, which is a huge bonus as well,” says Kevin Porter, Executive Director of Community Inclusions. “Many graduates continue to work with us as part of our day programs or residential programs.
“There are opportunities to be part of our team in the vocational programs at our facilities in Tignish Training Centre, Maple House Centre in O’Leary, and our Employment Unit, known as Drop-In Day. As well, students learn alongside our residential teams in our Tignish and Alberton homes.”
Hiring needs
“Since the inception of the first Human Services program offered in West Prince, we have hired summer students from that program. We are currently accepting applications from students enrolled in the Human Services program. We hope to be able to provide summer placements to a few students in our various departments.”
Other current openings:
- Casual Residential Support Workers
- Casual Community Support Workers

- three to four summer students hired through various student programs.

Rushell says many who work with Community Inclusions have a good work-life balance, and many say they receive just as much from their job as they give. “It can be a gratifying service for all involved.”
Volunteer hours
As part of the prerequisite requirements for many college and university programs, students must complete volunteer hours in their field of study. “We are happy to assist students in this way and we also offer the opportunity to complete job placements and summer job programs,” says Rushell.
Those who need volunteer hours to apply to the Human Services program can call Rushell MacDonald at 902-726-3144 and request an appointment.
