Commissionaires

May 18, 2023

Security service company focuses on hiring veterans, students, and other citizens

by Ethan Paquet

Commissionaires is a not-for-profit organization that provides security services to federal and provincial facilities, organizations, residential areas, and more. They also specialize in employment-related screening such as criminal record checks and digital fingerprinting.

Their location in Charlottetown currently employs about 200 staff who work at various job sites between Charlottetown and Summerside.

“We are dedicated to employing veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP,” says Julie McKnight, Employee Experience Coordinator. “We also recruit other citizens who are interested in contributing to the security and well-being of Canadians.”

They are currently hiring both part-time and full-time Security Officers. “For this role, common duties would include touring a site, making sure doors and windows are locked, checking IDs, escorting workers such as electricians and tradespeople and more, depending on the site.”

Shifts typically last 12 hours, from 7 pm to 7 am overnight, or 7 am to 7 pm during the day. Staff usually work four shifts on and four shifts off.

Student summer jobs

Julie encourages students to consider working with the Commissionaires over the summer. “We employ a number of students over the summer, but once the school year starts back up, they can often keep working with us on a part-time basis, picking up a shift during the week and on weekends.”

Wages and benefits

Wages start at $14.81 per hour but can vary depending on the duties involved at each site, Julie says. “The more intricate the job, the more the wages increase.

“We also offer benefits for employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. That includes health, vision, and dental benefits, life insurance, and accidental death and disability plans.”

How to apply

Applications for both the Charlottetown and Summerside areas can be found on the Commissionaires website. Julie encourages those looking to stand out to complete the section that asks how the applicant heard about the opportunity.

“We look for people who value the importance of security. When you apply, tell us how you heard about us and the reasons why you are interested in working for us.”
