Atlantic Aqua Farms

May 30, 2022

by Gloria Welton

Atlantic Aqua Farms is a fully integrated, rope cultured mussel farming and processing company. They are a large supplier of premium, live mussels in North America.

They have an office in Charlottetown, mussel plants in Georgetown and Borden, and various mussel farm locations. “Our processing and farming practices are focused on environmental stewardship, food safety, and quality,” says Cora MacIntyre, Human Resources.

Hiring needs

Labourers are needed for the mussel plant in Georgetown. Duties for this position include responsibility for the safe operation of the stripping equipment, removing mussels from the socks and placing mussels in tanks. “It is important to be willing to learn and follow all safety rules and policies.”

Mussel Boat Deck Hands are needed for various locations. These positions run Monday to Friday starting early mornings and are seasonal from April to December. “These staff also have opportunity to work during the off-season at the plants in Georgetown or Borden.”

This is a physical, outdoor position working under the direction of the Boat Operator, performing various farming tasks required for the successful production of blue mussels.

Production Employees are needed for the Borden location. These positions run Monday to Friday, and daily hours fluctuate. They are responsible for cleaning and packing fresh mussels and oysters and keeping the work area tidy and free from debris.

Quality Control Assistant is required for the Borden location. This position is responsible for monitoring quality attributes, testing product for flaws, reporting defects, record keeping, analyzing data and optimizing and creating processes for quality control, and to weigh, cook and analyze mussels to ensure they meet the standards.

“This is a sustainable industry,” says Cora. “This company has an excellent reputation for quality products, and they are very family oriented. The wages are competitive and there is an excellent benefit package.

“There is a team spirit with this company where all staff seem to want to make it a good setting and work together to get the product out the door. It is a fast-paced work setting where the day goes by quickly.

“There is room for advancement. I have worked for the company since 2019 and now I am being trained in Human Resources.”
