A seasonal job in construction can lead to a long-term career

May 17, 2023

by Ethan Paquet

Island Construction Ltd. is a family-owned heavy construction company that has been in operation for 77 years. Most of their work consists of paving driveways, highways, and commercial parking lots.

Located in Charlottetown, they typically have 25 year-round staff, but the demand during the construction season between mid-May to late November has led to the need to hire about 100 to 120 staff.

“Right now, we are hiring in just about every area,” says Laura Matheson, HR Manager. “We’re looking for Equipment Operators, Labourers, Class 1 and Class 3 Truck Drivers, Traffic Control Personnel, and Apprentice Mechanics or Licensed Mechanics.”

Wages and benefits

The pay varies depending on the position and skills and experience. An unskilled employee entering a Labourer position could expect a starting wage of $20 per hour plus benefits, Laura says.

“For both full-time and seasonal employees, we offer benefits including a gym membership, RRSP matching of four percent, and a company-funded Health Spending Account.”

Building a career in construction

Laura says that although staff may start as students or in an unskilled labourer position, the possibilities that await them can lead to a long-lasting, fulfilling career.

“If you’re willing to show up and have a good attitude and a willingness to learn, there are many career opportunities available not only with us, but also with companies in the construction industry, so you never know when an opportunity can lead to an advancement.”

How to apply

Open positions are posted on their Facebook page. “Anyone looking to apply can send their resumé to us directly through email or they can bring it to us in person at our office.”
